Taking your pulse rate

Your heart beats at different rates depending on what you are doing. Each time your heart beats, it pushes blood through the arteries which you can feel as a pulse. To find out how fast your heart is beating you need to take your pulse rate. The best way to do this is to place a finger on the artery near the surface of the skin on the inside of your wrist. Look at the picture below.

We usually measure a pulse rate by counting the number of beats in a minute.

Hold one hand out straight, elbow bent and palm facing up. Place the tips of your index and middle fingers of the other hand (do not use your thumb as this also has a pulse and could cause counting confusion) in the area under your thumb. You might need to move your fingers around until you feel a steady beat under the skin of your wrist.

Now count how many times you feel your pulse in 15 seconds and then multiply it by four. This will tell you how many beats there are in a minute. If you are between 7 and 9 years old, your pulse rate when you are at rest could be anything between 70 and 120 beats per minute.

What happens to your pulse rate after you have been playing? Do you know how easy or hard the games you are playing are? Try the pulse rate calculator to find out.
